Wilson Pickett • Land of 1000 Dances

Wilson Pickett drops Ringo Starr's name with no context in the intro to this soul classic. it reminds me of the night i got to see James Brown at the Lone Star Cafe on 18th St. in NYC right after the PCP debacle in GA. he intro'd a song by tributing recently departed legends which included the Blues Bros., Minnie Ripperton, and others. after the best show I've ever seen was over (which i recorded on my new Walkman Pro) i sneaked backstage where i found myself in a room with his hairdresser, Al Sharpton and his famous flame emcee. JB was sitting in a plastic chair drenched in sweat still wearing his red jumpsuit cut down to his navel, and after an awkward pause, he asked no one in particular, 'What time do we go on?'

One-two-three
One-two-three
Ow, uh, alright, uh!
Got to know how to pony
Like Bony Maronie
Mashed potato
Do the alligator
Put your hand on your hips, yeah
Let your backbone slip
Do the watusi
Like my little Lucy
Hey!
Uh, na-na-na-na-na na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na, I need somebody to help me say it one time
Na-na-na-na-na na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na, wo-ow!
Wow!
Uh, you know I feel alright
Ha, feel pretty good y'all
Uh, huh!
Na-na-na-na-na na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na, come on y'all, let's say it one more time
Na-na-na-na-na na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na, wo-ow!
Twist it in the alley
With long tall Sally
Twistin' with Lucy
Doin' the watusi
Roll over on your back
I like it like that
Do that Jerk-ah
Watch me work y'all
Ow, do it
Wow, do it
Just watch me do it
Aah, help me
Aah, help me
Aah, help me
Aah, help me
